On this Day – 23 Nov 1916

We have just been reminded via a Tweet from the RAF Museum that Maj L.G. Hawker VC, DSO was killed in a dogfight with Baron Manfred von Richtofen (the ‘Red Baron’).

One Response to “On this Day – 23 Nov 1916”

  1. Keith Chapman Says:

Yes, 97 years ago today, the first CO of XXIV Sqn (then RFC, now RAF) Major Lanoe Hawker VC DSO, was shot down and killed behind enemy lines after an epic dog fight with the Red Baron. His memorial now stands in the village of Ligny-Thilloy and we anticipate that the XXIV Sqn Association will hold a special ceremony of remembrance at this memorial in three years time to mark the Centenary of Hawker’s death.. [Keith Chapman, Chairman XXIV Sqn Association]
