Wally Makepeace

Sadly we have learnt from Martina Makepeace  that Wally passed away on Sunday 28th August 2011 and his funeral is on 7th September. Details are on www.wallymakepeace.info.

Wally had so many friends, was a larger than life character and served on XXIV Squadron on Hercules at Lyneham between 1974 – 1979 as a pilot before leaving for a career as a Captain on civil airlines.

Wally has left us far too soon. We served on XXIV Sqn together in the mid to late 1970s and he was an absolutely top-rate guy, both in the air and on the ground. Always good-humoured, always highly professional, always ready for a party! Good old Wally!

I knew Wally from Argosy days at Benson. I was under 25 when Marian and I got married so bought a bungalow in Didcot (the RAF did me a real favour there!). Whe I went on the captains course at Hayling Island Wally, being broke and newly married, used our place. We all helped one another out in those days.
I left the RAF about the same time as Wally, from XX1V Sqn as well, and applied to Laker and Air Europe. I took the job with Laker and a few days later Air Europe rang to say was I going to accept their offer! Wally took my place!
He was a great guy and full of life. Bill Lowe

Wally was a very good friend of mine and I shall be going to his funeral. Allen “Snowy” Snowball is giving the eulogy. We know he started out as an apprentice at Locking and then transferred to Halton. We think he was in the 90th at Locking and then the 91st at Halton. Can you throw any light on this? Thanks – Colin Clayton (ex 94th Locking)
