Princess takes salute at RAF Lynheham Tuesday 31st May 2011

The Princess Royal took the salute as the last remaining Royal Air Force squadrons said an official goodbye to RAF Lyneham today.

Anne, accompanied by her husband Vice Admiral Timothy Lawrence, attended the farewell parade of 24, 30 and 47 Squadrons and 47 Air Dispatch, Royal Logistics Corps.

The base, where servicemen killed in the conflict in Afghanistan are repatriated, leading to the famous cortege parades through Wootton Bassett, is due to close at the end of next year, with the majority of its planes, kit and personnel moving to RAF Brize Norton, in Oxfordshire.

Repatriations of service personnel, which have taken place through Lyneham since 2007, will go through Brize Norton from September.

More than 100 Armed Forces personnel attended the ceremony, long with local dignitaries, former base commanders and the RAF Lyneham “Old Boys” Association.

They were entertained by the Central Band of the RAF and there were three aircraft flypasts, including the Battle of Britain Flight C-47 Dakota and C-130 Hercules.
